• Injury occurred during training session
• 19-year-old Jack Butland named as replacement
Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy has been withdrawn from England’s squad for Euro 2012 due to a broken finger. Birmingham City’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Jack Butland has been called into the squad as his replacement.
Ruddy was one of two uncapped players included in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad, but has now been withdrawn after suffering the injury in training yesterday.
Butland, whose only experience at club level came this season on loan at Cheltenham, will now move up from the standby list and will join the squad next week ahead of the second warm-up friendly against Belgium. The decision sees Bursaspor’s Scott Carson overlooked and also spells bad news for Great Britain Olympic coach Stuart Pearce, as Butland was thought to be pencilled in as first choice for that tournament.
Ruddy will still travel with England for Saturday’s friendly against Norway. Joe Hart and Rob Green are the other goalkeepers in Hodgson’s squad.
